ended up swapping to Maya halfway through retopologizing this model. sections started to get really close together, even having tried to eliminate such areas in the modeling stage i feel as though i have discovered this before, but the new Maya modeling toolkit is actually better than using TopoGun. the only real pitfall is construction history, once i thought of disabling it during the retop, the whole process became faster and seems to work much better than TopoGun i think a small transition is in order, even though certain trivial tasks often seem more intuitive in TopoGun, i believe it is just a matter of getting used to the alternative
